European makes

Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, BMW, Audi, and similar

European manufacturers typically require an ACEA-rated oil (often alongside a manufacturer-specific approval) for compatibility with diesel particulate filters and emissions systems.

Japanese, Korean & American makes

Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Ford, and similar

These manufacturers commonly specify an API-rated oil at the viscosity grade stated in your owner's manual, without requiring a separate European-style ACEA rating.
